In 2018, my husband was suddenly stricken with a massive spike in his blood pressure, and ended up in the Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital. While the issue was caused by a bad reaction to a new blood pressure medication, the point was driven home to us that high blood pressure is very dangerous! In response to this incident, we decided that some lifestyle changes were in order…starting with our diet. After getting rid of caffeine (that was a hard one), we decided to tackle reducing salt in our diet.

We thought getting rid of caffeine was hard! We had no idea how difficult it would be to get sodium out of our diet. We quickly realized that there are not many low-sodium food options in the grocery stores. In fact, even the foods that were labeled as “Low Sodium” were in fact not very low in sodium at all! As we struggled to find foods that would keep us under the FDA’s recommended sodium limit (2300mg per day for a healthy person, 1500mg per day for someone with high blood pressure), we became compulsive label readers. We found that the low sodium offerings, if they even existed, were most often only marginally lower in sodium than the standard versions!

We soon decided that, if we were to meet the guidelines, we would need to stop using as many processed foods as possible. We searched for new recipes that sounded good and avoided processed ingredients, but we stopped adding salt. And UGH!! Everything tasted so bland! After about one month, our taste buds got somewhat acclimated, but everything was still really bland tasting.

So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I invented our first ultra-low seasoning blend, the Adobo Seasoning Blend, and it had only 1mg of sodium per serving. And best of all, it was DELICIOUS! With this success, I started working on additional seasoning blends and foods, all with much less sodium than store-bought counterparts. Soon we had over a half-dozen seasonings and food products that were super-low in sodium and tasted GREAT. As we gave these products to friends and relatives to try, we soon realized others also loved them. They were using up what we gave them, and asking for more when they ran out! We soon decided that we could help folks in the USA kick the salt habit and get healthier, and so Lauri Lee’s was born!

We also discovered that people who don’t have a need to reduce sodium enjoy these seasoning blends and foods as much as people that DO need to reduce sodium.
